Fan or Fanatic?

So... I've never watched Oprah before. Not even once. I work during the day... and, admittedly, I'm somewhat naturally suspicious of most people so widely revered. (But, as I said, for no good or well-researched reason in this case).

I've heard the message being portrayed in this video - in SO many places the past 3 years. Not doubting at all that it's becoming prevalent. As I've indicated in previous posts, I'm convinced that tolerance (not in the semi-decent sense of 'live and let live') and diversity (not in the good sense of accepting - but needing to agree with - people from other backgrounds and faiths) have become this culture's gods. Close friends and family may even think I'm somewhat of a fanatic in my 'irrational' block toward these kinds of messages.

However, because I've never watched her show, I'm unqualified to make a call on whether this youtube compilation is actually representative of her message. (Please watch).

Based on what y'all know of 'O' - is this representative? Or fear-based fanaticism? All thoughts are welcome here. Not asking whether you think the message of spirituality the compilation is bashing is true - just whether it's representative of material on her show... Whatchyathink?

I am reminded of 2Corinthians 11:3-4. Paul was writing to the Corinthians regarding false prophets. "But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent. You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed." I am also reminded of Matthew 24. Christ is talking about what to look for as signs of His return. Verse 4 says, "Don't let anyone mislead you. For many will come in my name, saying, "I am the Messiah." They will lead many astray.

I am in no way applying that Oprah is a false prophet. However, I see how easy it would be for many to be lead astray. I am challenged by these scriptures. "Don't let anyone mislead you." How do I go about that?? I HAVE GOT TO KNOW THE TRUTH. I have to take responsibilty to read and know the Word of God. He has given it to us, and what a beautiful gift it is!! He has laid it all out for us, we need simply to grasp hold of it. Read it. Study it. Speak it. Hide it in our hearts. I have to know it so well that when I come up against a false teaching I will be able to discern the fact that it is false. I have also had a renewed challenge to make sure the truth is instilled in my children. It is my heart's desire that all four of my children KNOW the truth of Jesus Chirst. I want them to have such a strong foundation that when they too come against false teachings weather it comes from a teacher at school, a mainstreamed ideal or a television talk show host, they will not be shaken. They will be able to stand firm in the truth.

We all must have "Oprah on the mind" I just did a post on this a couple days ago. Yes, this mentality is what she preaches on her show. It is all about me. What make me happy. What others need to do to make me happy. Who I need to worship to be happy. Whatever I need. That's the Oprah show. Whatever is the best for YOU-go for it, she says. No rules.

I actually watch Oprah 3-5 days a week. I've found her to be one of the most generous to those less fortunate, reuniting families, and helping those in need. I have seen this book club selection, but just thought it was another book and never paid it much attention because it's not my style of book. I've never heard of the Church of O before nor have I heard it mentioned on her show. I have heard her many times mention & thank God on her show. I sincerely hope & pray that this clip is not true. I don't pay attention to these kind of messages myself because I know what I believe in my heart as the truth about God and that is what I will instill in my children. Thanks for the eye opener.

I guess it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone with her money, power, and influence to believe that God is anything other than what she "feels" he should be.

Yes, She thanks "God" on her show. But she does not mean our God.
She says God can be whatever higher power you want it to be and that we are not saved by Jesus.

Wow, that's so very frightening to me. Not in a personal way but for others that seem to do/say/wear/read/eat...whatever Oprah endorses.

I haven't watched Oprah in years, since high school in the early 90's.

I do know that for awhile whatever book Oprah mentioned that her book club would be reading always shot way up on the bestseller's list. That is power.

I think this power of influence that she has has crept up slowly. I believe she has an episode she titles her Favorite Things, it might be around Christmas time or Mother's Day, I don't know, but my point is that she lists/hands out/gives away, whatever, her favorite things. I have heard people in my own family that will purchase pajamas that cost a ridiculous amount of money because they were mentioned on that show. She has slowly gotten to be such a power in our culture that she probably could mislead many, many people.

Again, I haven't watched her show in years so I don't know of what she speaks nowadays. I have just seen and heard of how her influence affects people on purely material things. I can't imagine the damage that could be done with Oprah leading people down wrong paths spiritually. I don't know what's in her heart but, to me, it doesn't sound like she feels Jesus is the only way.

just curious, lauralynn, besides the video -v- had on her site where have you heard that Oprah has said these things. I'm curious to read more. I've watched it so many times, but I don't get to watch the whole thing, I more or less catch bits & pieces between playing with 2 kids so I don't always hear verything. I don't want to seem like I support her by watching her show if this is in fact what she's teaching because that is most definately not the way I believe when it comes to God. Please let me know where you found your info. so I too can research it. I honestly thought she was a truly faithful person doing good for others.
